{ } Positions and formats

  • Six positions: bottom or top, left, centre or right, set 24 points (about 8.5 mm) in from the edge.
  • Five formats: plain (1, 2, 3), 1 / N, Page 1, Page 1 of N, and lower-case roman (i, ii, iii).
  • Start at any number. The total N follows the start, so a 10-page file starting at 5 reads 5 / 14 — useful when a document continues an earlier volume.
  • Skip the first page keeps a cover clean; the second page is then numbered 2 (or your start plus one), not 1.

{ } How the numbers are drawn

Numbers are drawn as new text in Helvetica at the size you choose (default 11 pt) in dark grey. They are real text — selectable and searchable — not an image. Existing page numbers in the document are not detected or replaced, so a file that already has them will show both.

{ } Mixed page sizes and rotated pages

Each number is placed relative to its own page’s size, so a document mixing A4 and Letter gets consistent margins. A page that carries a rotation attribute is numbered in its stored orientation, which can leave the number sideways on a rotated scan — run Rotate PDF first if the number must read upright.

{ } Limits

  • Helvetica covers Latin characters only, and the five formats are fixed. For custom text such as “Sheet 3 of 12” use Add Header & Footer, which accepts {n} and {total}.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.

Add Page Numbers to PDF works on the file you upload. Adjust the options, then select Process ▸ and it runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server — then shows the result in the Output panel.

Inputs

  • PDF file — upload a file (.pdf); it is read locally in your browser
  • Position — choose one — Bottom center, Bottom right, Bottom left, Top center, Top right, Top left (default: Bottom center)
  • Format — choose one — 1, 2, 3, 1 / N, Page 1, Page 1 of N, i, ii, iii (default: 1, 2, 3)
  • Start at — a value (default: "1")
  • Font size — a value (default: "11")
  • Skip the first page — on/off toggle (default: off)

Output

A downloadable PDF file — use the Download button in the Output panel.
