How to edit a PDF on an iPhone or iPad in Safari

iOS already handles PDFs better than most people realise — Files, Quick Look and Markup between them cover viewing, light annotation and signing. What iOS does not give you is merging, splitting, compressing or converting. Those are the gaps, and a browser tab fills them.

Choosing a file in Safari

Tap the file picker and iOS offers Photo Library, Take Photo, and Choose File. Choose File opens the Files app, which reaches iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, and any other storage provider you have added. A PDF sitting in Mail or Messages needs saving to Files first.

What iOS already does — and what it does not

• Markup can sign and annotate a PDF, so use it when that is all you need.
• Printing to PDF via the share sheet is the quickest way to turn a web page into a PDF.
• There is no built-in merge, split, page reorder, or compress — that is where these tools come in.

Photos to a PDF

Pictures of a document taken on an iPhone are usually HEIC, and many services choke on them. Images to PDF accepts them directly and gives you one PDF with the pages in the order you arrange. For a cleaner result, use the Notes app scanner first — it deskews and crops the page — then bring the export here for merging or compressing.

Processing happens inside the Safari tab, so the document stays on the device and never touches iCloud or a server.

A note on Low Power Mode and long jobs

iOS is aggressive about reclaiming memory from background tabs. Keep the tab visible while a large file is processing; if you switch apps mid-run, Safari may discard the page and you will need to start again. Low Power Mode also throttles the work, so a big compression job is best done plugged in.

Where the download goes

Safari saves downloads to the Downloads folder in Files, on iCloud Drive by default. Tap the download arrow in the toolbar to open it, then share it onward from Files like any other document.
